I'm hoping someone here recognizes the story and can provide a link. I read it on AO3, and it would have been posted there some time between August 2013 and now. I don't know if it's on LJ.

It's multi-chaptered, Coulson/Barton centric, and contains a very minor scene in "Thor's Hammer" Nevada, where Barton has been practicing shooting from the top of a SHIELD trailer with the sun in his eyes. Coulson's on the phone with someone else, observing Barton from a distance. Someone comes out of the trailer and calls up to Barton. Coulson thinks they're going to get into a fight, but it turns out that trailer guy and Barton just talk and discuss additional shooting locations for Barton to try.

I don't know if you've found this already, but I think it might be The Way We Really Are (http://archiveofourown.org/works/940260) - I was reading ti last night and stumbled on the scene. It's one chapter but a long story - the scene you mentioned is towards the end, and Phil's on the phone with Maria Hill.
