This fic is at least a few years old, probably AO3. The basic concept was what if May died and Tony did not adopt Peter. I can't remember if this one was an intentional choice or everyone was too busy and just didn't realize.

The biggest thing I do remember is that Peter goes to a home where the foster mother uses peppermint oil on everything, and Peter almost dies. At some point he may have sent the spider suit back to Tony, but I could be mixing this up with another fic.
