Old school recs?

I've been thinking (dangerous, I know). Given that both fanfic and the Avengers have existed since well before I was born, there has fic out there that predates the movieverse. But pretty much all the fic I've seen has been written in just last couple years. I've seen maybe a couple fics from the late 2000s (civil-war fixers) and nothing from early. So my question is, does anyone know where the older fic is living, and/or have some old-school recs for me? Some of it has to be awesome.

Date: 2013-02-11 12:24 am (UTC)So your best bet is searching via tags, sorting by Date Posted then going to the last page and work your way back from oldest to newest?
So on Fanfiction.net - http://www.fanfiction.net/comic/Avengers/3/0/0/1/0/0/0/0/0/29/0/ (that's just the Avengers tag under Comics, but you could look through the individual character tags as well here http://www.fanfiction.net/comic/).
And there are a bunch of tags on AO3 you could look through that aren't specifically movie verse, again just sorting Date Posted and jump to last page.
The Avengers (Marvel) - All Media Types (http://archiveofourown.org/tags/The%20Avengers%20(Marvel)%20-%20All%20Media%20Types/works?commit=Sort+and+Filter&page=967&utf8=%E2%9C%93&work_search[complete]=0&work_search[language_id]=&work_search[other_tag_names]=&work_search[query]=&work_search[sort_column]=revised_at), Marvel 616 (http://archiveofourown.org/tags/Marvel%20616/works?page=85), The Avengers - Ambiguous Fandom (http://archiveofourown.org/tags/The%20Avengers%20-%20Ambiguous%20Fandom/works?page=1006), Avengers (comics) (http://archiveofourown.org/tags/Avengers%20(Comics)/works?page=38).
I don't know if you're expecting to find fanfic written in the 60's or something, but with the internet not becoming widely available until the 90's, plus comic books originally being a vastly male orientated hobby? I don't think there's gonna be too many 'old school' fics pre-dating when the MCU originally started in 2008 (though there may be a few based on the original movies/TV shows).
I know some girls who are huge comic book fans, but 9 out of 10 fans I know got into reading comics post MCU creation, and having crushes on RDJ etc, so pretty sure most of the fic out there is going to be film verse or comic book verse written more recently than you're hoping to find ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Date: 2013-02-11 05:00 am (UTC)I guess I was hoping there might be someone uploading pre-internet fic somewhere. I passed trough Original Star Trek fandom last year and found some awesome fic from the 70s. Of course, there is sampling bias there. If someone holds onto hardcopy fic for decades and archives it to the net, it's got to be some awesome fic. :)
PS:¯\_(ツ)_/¯? never saw this before. I may steal it.

Date: 2013-02-11 06:31 pm (UTC)From all accounts, Star Trek is one of the very first fandoms to exist but that was always TV so I think fic happened a lot sooner for it, where as fic for Avengers probably increased dramatically once it went from purely comic books to TV & film - from smaller audience buying comics to larger general audience watching. But may be worth tracking down some older fansites (Geocities etc), see if they link to any fanfiction sites? :-)
And you may steal the emoticon lol! I can't remember who created it, someone on a community I mod just started using it one day a year or so ago so we made it a tag :D

Date: 2013-02-11 02:17 am (UTC)There's plenty of things you'll find on AO3 (and elsewhere) that might have a mid-/late-2000s posting date, but that doesn't mean it wasn't written earlier.
It's really going to depend on 'verse, I think, when it comes to finding "old-school" - if you mean based on older comics canon or various cartoon verses. Searching by 'verse will probably yield you better results, then.
As for something based on old-school comics, I highly recommend:
Living in Clover (http://ailette.livejournal.com/18733.html) and sequel The Fourth Leaf(http://ailette.livejournal.com/24611.html) ((note: both Steve/Tony))
