Death of Captain America

Hey there,
new to this and already hooked *grin*

Now I'm curious: Are there any stories that are like the comic "The death of Captain America"?
I mean stories in which everyone thinks Steve is dead and then Bucky takes over just to find Steve alive again?
I would love to read something like this!

And where do you find all those amazing stories?
I'm trying to find my way through Archive of our own and Fanfiction.net but it's difficult.

Yes, I do this too. Also I've found a few good sources of rec lists - copperbadge posts quality rec lists from time to time, thefourthvine used to post tons of recs in a variety of fandoms and her archives are well worth trawling (although there are a lot of broken links after all this time, so sometimes things are hard/impossible to find).

I don't really like searching tags unless I'm looking for a specific, rare thing that won't have hundreds or thousands of hits.

Oh sorry, yes, they both are. [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine isn't very active these days but you can find links to all her fandom tags on the sidebar of her LJ under 'Fandom Index'. I don't think she has much if any Avengers recs, but she has recs in many, many other fandoms. [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge is more active on tumblr right now (same name) but here are his reclist archives too.

The other thing I've done is simply ask. When I joined a new fandom recently (Hawaii Five-0) I went to one of these recommendation communities and simply said I'm new to H50, give me all your favorite fics. I got so many responses, I still haven't had a chance to go through all of them! And a really incredible variety, too. (And not all to my liking, but that's to be expected. Most of them were great, though.) People are very giving about this sort of thing.

Actually, related to your original request: I don't know "The death of Captain American" or any comics, really, but the closest thing I can think of to your description is The Silver Age by the aforementioned copperbadge. It's "an alternate universe in which Tony Stark was born in 1950 and the Winter Soldier was recovered in 1967, after a failed attempt to assassinate Howard and Maria Stark." He becomes Tony's friend and bodyguard. In Part 3, they find Steve.
