Poor Loki... :(

Hope someone can feed my newest addiction...

I just finished ConeyCat's amazing Housemates 'verse, where she delves deep into her interpretation of Loki's character, the misunderstandings that caused the events of 'Thor', the failings of Frigga & Odin's A+ parenting, etc etc.  I'd love love LOVE to read more fics in this vein:  where Loki's choices were caused by loneliness and misery, not by an evil streak, where redemption is possible; fics where Thor realizes he truly loves his brother, despite how he has ignored and excluded him in teh past.  Fics where Odin didn't bring home a changeling child simply to use him to further his own kingdom, but rather because he couldn't let a baby die of exposure.  Fics where Loki was the outsider growing up, was abused or neglected, etc etc etc.

Gen, Slash or Het welcome, just no Thor/Loki, unless you feel it is a truly amazing read.  Happy endings (or at least hopeful) preferred, but I don't mind a good hard cry either!

Thank you in advance!

I've read literally hundreds of Loki stories, and will read all kinds of tropes I can think of some stories which fill part of your request, though a lot of what I read is Thorki. Are you OK with frostiron or other slash Loki pairings? I do read het and gen as well.

Here’s one of my all-time favorite stories. It deals with issues of racism and internalized racism, and what defines the word “monster”. There’s some great conversations with Loki and Bruce. There’s a good scene when clueless but good bro Thor tries to tell the rest of the Avengers about a quest when Loki saved the day, but still manages to mostly leave that part out. There’s another scene in which Thor admits, if he’d been sent to Midgard with his powers intact, he might have tried to conquer it as well. I have so many favorite scenes in this story it’s hard to just choose a couple. I hope it fits your request, at least a little bit.

Ask Me No Questions by Alex51324
When Thor returns from Asgard to rejoin the Avengers, he brings Loki in tow--stripped of his magic and bound with a geas that allows him to speak only in response to direct questions. AKA, yet another "Loki lives with the Avengers; chaos ensues" story.

You said "Fics where Odin didn't bring home a changeling child simply to use him to further his own kingdom, but rather because he couldn't let a baby die of exposure."

Here's a short piece which fits that description:

A Holy Place by Rynfinity

And - I know this is the complete opposite of what you requested but this is an excellent redemption story and it's one of the few where Odin doesn't punish Loki but gets him the help he needs to recover. Plus, it has a great plot.

Overlapping Spaces by khilari, Persephone_Kore
Summary: Thor returns to Earth a month after the Chitauri invasion to keep his promises -- to see Jane again, and take her to see Asgard, even if the rainbow bridge is still undergoing repairs. Not that Jane is complaining about watching the repairs. But she wasn't expecting Loki to be haunting the palace library, even in psychiatric care; and Loki wasn't expecting to make friends with Thor's mortal girlfriend.

I'll try to think of a few more non-slash stories which fit your request.

My seven favorite Loki novels

[identity profile] catalenamara.livejournal.com 2015-05-27 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
These are novels that I've read, sometimes more than once.

No Such Liberty by Xparrot (Gen)
Summary: The first thing Loki said, after he had swiped his tongue over his lips to wet them, was, "You shouldn't trust me."
Following the attack on New York, Thor takes Loki back to Asgard in chains; but this does not mean that the god of mischief's schemes are ended, or that Thor has or ever will give up on his brother. But when Thanos threatens the realm to claim his lost prizes, on which side will Loki fall?
http://archiveofourown.org/works/461963

A Morbid Taste for Ice by sitehound (tasertricks)
Summary: Darcy Lewis likes to think of herself as terribly adaptable, with an "if life gives you lemons, zap life with a Taser and demand chocolate" sort of attitude. And life, lately, has had a perverse sense of humor, first trapping her in a state of perpetual Science Assistant in the armpit of New Mexico known as Puente Antiguo; and then forcing her to live in a trailer home with Jane Foster, Jane's guy, Thor, and his brother, Loki, master of mischief and wide-scale urban renewal. But Darcy's not about to let her situation get her down. She's managed to get pretty good at her job, and with liberal application of a credit card, made her rustic house a home. And wielding a Taser and armored by her snarky wit, she's more than a match for the God of Mischief. Stumbling face-first over the frozen body of a friend on the front porch, however, is more than even mostly unflappable Darcy can handle. The obvious suspect is her mentally unstable roommate. But despite all his other faults, Darcy is certain Loki isn't the perpetrator. And not just because she's starting for fall for him....

Winterheart by goddamnhella (frostiron)
Summary: For his crimes, Loki’s punishment began in a lonely and endless winter. For Tony’s sacrifice, his imprisonment began with a rescue. A story of ugliness and beauty, inside and out, and learning what the word ‘monster’ really means.
http://archiveofourown.org/works/1002536

Chaos War by Astolat (Thorki)
Summary: It was never easy to find Loki when he wanted to hide, but he wasn't doing a particularly good job of it at the moment. Probably he didn't think anyone from Asgard would be wasting their time hunting for him while the shining ones churned their way steadily through all the realm.

The other three are ones we've already mentioned: Ask Me No Questions, Bargaining, and Overlapping Spaces.

I also highly rec the following:

I do solemnly swear by Mikkeneko
Summary: In which our heroes learn the perils of lack of inter-team communication, and Loki gives his side of the story.
http://archiveofourown.org/works/518534

Road to Nowhere by Lise (Gen)
Summary: When Loki turns up demanding Thor's help on a quest to retrieve the All-Mother from Valhalla, Thor isn't about to say no. But that doesn't mean he's forgotten anything, and what better time than a road trip through the backwaters of the universe for trying to talk things out?
http://archiveofourown.org/works/1155790

Take the Long Way Home by cavaleira (Thorki)
Summary: Thor strikes a deal with Loki: each month, he will trade half of his golden apple for one day spent together in a temporary truce. Both brothers find themselves getting more than they bargained for.
http://archiveofourown.org/works/470291

Banished by Muriel_Perun (Thorki)
Summary: After the Chitauri War, Odin sentences Loki to exile as a human on Midgard, in the city of New York, where he runs afoul of the Avengers again. Tony Stark makes Loki his personal project. But is exile enough to make Loki change? Or would Loki rather die than adapt to his situation?

Proantagonist's "Bargaining" is a really good read!

Totally agreed; "Bargaining" is one of the best Loki novels ever.

This is pretty much everything I want in Loki fics too, so I second this. I think nearly all my favorite Loki fics fit these qualifications one way or another if you want to check my bookmarks on AO3 (http://archiveofourown.org/users/100indecisions/bookmarks) for now (I can actually go through and pick out some especially good ones later, because as it turns out my bookmarks are a huge mess).

Just to put it out here anyways cuz I find the fics truly amazing and do not receive enough attention for the amazing writing
