Looking for Marvel games where Loki isn't just a bad guy
That's a weirdly specific request, I realize, but I'm an MCU Loki fan of the "all sympathetic interpretations and/or redemption arcs all the time" variety, so while I'd really like to play a video game with Loki in it (even better if he's a playable character), I'm not overly interested in one where he's just a one-dimensional villain...and I don't exactly have the time or money to try everything myself. So I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions--maybe experience with the games I've listed under the cut, or something totally different.
- The apparently god-awful Thor movie tie-in game for consoles--I'm sort of interested because Tom and Chris actually voice the characters, but as I understand it, Loki's the villain in a way that doesn't really even make sense with movie canon.
- Disney Infinity--I think he's the bad guy in at least one Thor-focused storyline but also a playable character? So...does that mean you can also play him as not a villain in sandbox mode or something (and potentially in other storylines)? I don't entirely understand how this works.
- LEGO Super Heroes--I keep wanting to buy this and then not getting it for this exact reason. Is Loki just a nuance-free villain in this (despite maybe being based on MCU canon)?
- Marvel Heroes 2015--it looks like Loki's a playable character both in a comics costume (which I really don't care about tbh) and an MCU costume but...also a storyline villain? Again: I don't get how this works.
- Marvel Avengers Alliance--see above. On the wiki it looks like Comics Loki is an enemy and MCU Loki (or at least Loki in his MCU costume) is an unlockable hero, which is slightly hilarious to me and also pretty much what I'm looking for, but I'd still like to hear from someone who's played it.
- Marvel Contest of Champions--from the Wikipedia article, it looks like Loki isn't a playable character. Is that true?
- Marvel Puzzle Quest and Marvel Pinball--are these anything but Bejeweled and pinball with Marvel decorations? Not hugely interested, if so.
So--has anyone played any of these games or others you'd recommend?
LEGO Super Heroes
When you first start the game you are going to play through the storyline. Loki will be a villain for his section (he's later in the game). Once you have completed all the story segments, you can free play the characters you "buy" (with the money you've collected destroying things).
Loki is a "unlockable" character. You can freeplay the story segments or do the city freeplay with him.
He is actually a good freeplay character because he can shoot things with his staff, freeze things with the casket, he can fight, and he can unlock puzzles.
If it helps, Venom --who is also a villain-- is a good freeplay character because he can move back and forth between a Spiderman-like character and a Hulk-like chracter.

Re: LEGO Super Heroes
There are also Bonus Side Missions (in New Your City Hub) that are unlocked after you finish the the main story. That then have a Free Play component.
There are Mission like objectives in the city play. There are 50 total Stan Lee in Perils (where you rescue Stan Lee). 15 in the main story, 11 in the bonus, and 24 in the city hub.
Then there is collecting the rest of the gold bricks throughout the city hub (and up on the helicarrier). Which could be anything from having your character find a missing cat to driving a taxi around NY or helping Professor X.

(I will say though, my fingers are crossed for the deal Marvel and Telltale made recently (http://www.themarysue.com/marvel-telltale-new-game/). It would PROBABLY never happen but I'd really dig a Telltale game about Loki's experiences after falling from the Bifrost.)
EDIT: Here's a really good article (http://pixelkin.org/2014/10/07/review-disney-infinity-marvel-superheroes/) explaining Disney Infinity. (Honestly, if I'm feeling weak in the coming weeks I might end up just buying the figure for my desk at work even if I don't own the game)

Very helpful article about Disney Infinity, thank you! And sad lol at Loki leading a bunch of Frost Giants to do anything. I mean, going by the costumes I guess this part isn't really based on the movies (more the Avengers Assemble cartoon, maybe?), but still. I'm still wondering how the Play Set story mode works with newer characters--like, Loki is a playable character now, and when I checked out his demo at the store, he was shown fighting Frost Giants. I guess I should really just download the free PC version and see if I can figure out more by actually playing it.
I've had the exact same thought on the Marvel/Telltale game. I mean, I know it's not going to happen, BUT WHAT IF IT DID.

Are you on Tumblr? I need to follow more people there who like Loki in similar ways as I do.
OH MY GOD YES (http://qualapec.tumblr.com/). (I am in a very similar boat!)
I am also very weak and I need all the Lokis. All of them. I have, uh, eight Loki figures already?
Ahh, I MEAN. I don't have that many...but I do have the Loki Hot Toys figure that came out after The Dark World. So I have one really expensive one >:D

Oh man! You're the first person I've met who also thinks so! I actually have a post where I was brainstorming about what it could be. My top three guesses are: Loki, Spider-Man, or Winter Soldier background.
I will say, like a month before the announcement, I was playing TWD and it occured to me what a perfect avenue a TT game would be for a Loki spinoff of any kind. (I mean, there is hope, since Thor: Ragnarok comes out the same year the game will).
With my luck it will probably be Howard the Duck but a girl can dream.Like, I don't think a movie will happen since he's so well represented in other movies, and honestly, I don't think Marvel could pitch that, because their movie thing is straight-up hero heroes, and I don't think that's the right way to handle a good Loki story (even a redemption arc-- I think a Loki solo story would always need to be a bit darker). I'd say a Netflix series, maybe, but that's a pretty high cost for not much payoff. Then it occurred to me: boom, Telltale. Then a few weeks later, that announcement was made.I will say, if it IS about Loki, I will feel like a prophet.

Totally agree about Loki game vs. movie. I actually haven't played any Telltale games yet (I have so, so many games in my Steam library I haven't played yet), so I'm not positive how they are with balancing player choices against a distinct storyline, but I can definitely see that working. Tbh I'm a little leery of anything going really in-depth about what happened to Loki between Thor and Avengers, because I've read a lot of really great fic that I'd hate to see invalidated, and frankly I trust ficwriters to do right by Loki more than I trust anyone at Marvel. But I guess we'll see. I'd also love to see a game about a character who's received less attention so far, ideally a female character--like, a game about Gamora or Black Widow could be really amazing.

Yeah like, I try not to think about how I have $400+ worth of Hot Toys figures upstairs...I have Loki, and TWS Black Widow. I had a couple rough university quarters this year and I used Hot Toys to motivate myself LOL.

^^^ I agree with this.
Ideally, honestly what I would like in my IDEAL world, is for the Telltale game to be set in the "Court of Thanos", for lack of a better word. Telltale has done really awesome things with having multiple, fairly diverse POVs. Their Game of Thrones game is mostly dudes, but has 4 major characters, but their Borderlands game (which I would recommend first), has FANTASTIC POV balance between a dude and a lady.
So what I would really want, is a game with Loki, Gamora, and Nebula as characters-- we learn a lot more about all of them, their actors aren't SO big that they couldn't be brought in to VO, and it gives more background info for Infinity War!
Lol, though I am in complete agreement about not necessarily trusting anyone at Marvel to handle Loki well. Everyone was super excited about the Russo bros possibly doing Infinity War, and I'm just sitting over here like "...but will they treat Loki well or will they make him the cautionary side of a morality tale ending..."
That being said, I've watched some of my favorite tv antagonists get the shittiest writing and have their actors recover it and make sense of it. Lana Parilla in OUAT, and Rob James-Collier in Downton both have worked really hard to rationalize terrible writing choices and maintain some vestige of continuity (IMO), so while I don't trust anyone at Marvel, I DO have some faith that Hiddleston can work with whatever he's given! (Or I hope @_@ at least )

Many of the little figures are very well done.

The last time the figures went on sale I had to make a choice and I came home with Stitch and Groot.

YEP, I was the drunk girl looking for the Disney Infinity Loki figure and a Nancy Drew game in the middle of the night. Sums up my interests pretty well, tbqh.

Marvel Puzzle Quest
The first round is fairly easy. The second, the characters you are opposing get a go, so it's a back and forth across the board. You're character can get injured or be taken out of the game.
Loki is a cover that you could randomly acquire. You can play him on your team.
The game is okay. If you are will to spend a little real money it might be better. The Loki "cover" is also kind of smarmy looking. I believe they are using his appearance from Dark Reign comics.
