homophobia

Are there any fic where an Avenger is unexpectedly homophobic, and it is NOT Steve just because he's from the past? I guess I would be okay with it being Steve for any other reason, but that idea has been done a lot. Anything where someone is some sexuality other than straight, and some Avenger surprises everyone else with their negative reaction? And hopefully gets better?

One of my absolute favourite fics dealing with homophobia is Anna Fugazzi's Not About Superheroes (A Private Little War) (http://archiveofourown.org/works/747827). It IS Steve-focussed, but it's not as simple as 'he's from the past'. It's all tangled up with religion and traditional values that come from religion, and the homophobia is first and foremost internalised homophobia. It's a deep, complex story that delves into self-image, sexuality and identity, and shows how people grow and change but how that growth and change is so often hard-won and painful, both for the individual and for those around them. I think it's worth giving it a go, even if it isn't specifically what you were looking for, just because it's such a gem. It's also a long, plotty teamfic with slow-burn Steve/Tony, so if longfic is your thing, I think you'll like it.

Ah, well. I'm glad you liked it, even if it wasn't new to you, today. Hopefully someone who hasn't read it will see this rec and read it, now!

Having a poke around, seeing if I can find you anything that meets your specs better. Probably the best I've found so far are Not Easily Conquered (http://archiveofourown.org/series/115516), which has people being homophobic about Steve and Bucky (namely, Peggy), and ...And Miles To Go. (http://archiveofourown.org/works/1247977) which has homophobia which is kind of a misunderstanding? But still good and relevant enough to qualify.

I'll keep looking, and if I find any better I'll let you know.
